The Final 1980s Stop & Shop Storefront
The barely-visible logo above the former Stop & Shop in Paramus, NJ is the final remaining example of the 1982 logo visible on a storefront. The company has changed its logo three times since this one was introduced, and you can see all of the newer variations on this article from Logos-World.net for a deeper dive into their history. To my knowledge, all other locations (open or closed) got their signage updated since this logo was changed in 2002. Unfortunately, the awning is torn, the building is boarded up, and soon the entire property (including the long-shuttered K-Mart next door) will be razed to make way for a Costco. So if you're interested in seeing the final storefront of a pre-2000s Stop & Shop, better visit while you can.
You can find it at this address: 1345 NJ-17, Paramus, NJ 07652
Some odds and ends worth mentioning--
- According to this article from NorthJersey.com, the supermarket closed in January of 2022.
- The supermarket was originally built as a Grand Union, which explains its interesting appearance. Stop & Shop didn't change the exterior of the building much upon their arrival.
- Although this is the final storefront sign that I know of featuring the 1982-2002 logo, there are still locations with the interiors relatively untouched since the turn of the century. Locations like the Ringwood, NJ had interior signage featuring this logo as recently as 2024, and I'm sure there are several other locations like it.
- I took these photos on February 21st, 2025. It is not currently snowing in Paramus. It's actually pretty warm outside today.
- I don't believe there are any stores using pre-1982 logos, open or closed, which would give this building the distinction of having the oldest remaining storefront signage of any Stop & Shop.
